Wireless probe with real-time feedback visualization 

  • Sirius Pintuition is a tumor localization system developed and commercialized by Sirius Medical, a med-tech company based in the High Tech Campus Eindhoven. As part of its expansion strategy and market differentiation, the company decided to redesign the probe used for localizing magnetic seeds implanted at the location of a breast tumor.

Project brief

Redesign the Sirius Pintuition Probe. Requirements: Clearly indicate grip orientation, provide on-probe feedback and optimize dimension to reduce volume and enhance grip.

 Shape and grip exercise

A brief hands-on approach helped me to kickstart the design process. Understanding the shapes, weight, and overall construction of the device was important to clarify the key elements of the concept design as follow: the probe must be used by right and left-handed users, it must integrate multiple affordances to intuitively communicate orientation of use, and it must optimize the visualization of data and examination workflow.

Concept design

The initial concept design offers a sleek and minimalistic hand-held interface. On the top side, the probe integrates an inclined screen to display the distance to the magnetic seed, and a lighting ring delivering directional cues to guide the practitioner to the target. On the front, the probe has a flat section for grip and orientation indication.

The on-probe feedback implements the same principles and graphic elements used by the company’s UI, enhancing the market differentiation, customer experience, and recognition.

This concept design is currently under evaluation by the board members of Sirius Medical.
